Just like building a house, you need sustainable tools to make it happen. As you start expanding your creativity when cultivating new plant-based meals, you will stumble upon recipes where certain kitchen utensils are needed. Typical vegan dishes that are great to make include zoodles, salads, juices, smoothies, acai bowls, veggie rolls, and much more.
If you’re like me, I cannot afford expensive blenders or food processors to help make tasty dishes happen. I went on the hunt online and went to several stores to find the best options to include in my budget-friendly vegan starter kit.
If you are new to making plant-based dishes in your kitchen, below is a list of items that are most commonly used and also, are budget-friendly (you can purchase these items here).
Vegetable Spiralizer & Peeler
The vegetable spiralizer and peeler are typically always budget-friendly, and my go-to item for pasta and noodle making! Both the spiralizer and peeler are two utensils you are going to be often using. So, I suggest getting one of each that is strong and durable.
First of all, the vegetable spiralizer usually includes different blades to create various types of noddles. It’s a great asset to use to make veggie pasta dishes or to produce vegetable shavings to include in salads.
Lastly, the vegetable peeler is also a wonderful budget-friendly item and commonly used in the kitchen for our vegetables. The peeler is an excellent tool to make vegetable lasagna or vegetable rolls.
A Set of Sharp Knives
Ready to get your chopping game on? Because you’re going to be doing a lot of it! There is no way that you will be able to make various types of dishes without the need for a good set of sharp knives.
However, usually, kitchen knives are something every other household has already. So, if you have a good set, then you’re great to go. If you don’t, I suggest looking for a set of knives that have durable blades and a sharpener. Since knives will be your best friend when chopping fruits, chopping vegetables, and dicing, they’ll most likely wear off over time. Having a sharpener with your set will assist you in routinely sharping your knives so they can cut through produce smoothly.
Why buy a juicer, blender, and food processor – when you can have all three in one?
I find it hysterically funny when vegan advocates promote the Vitamix consistently. As if your average person can afford a thousand dollar juicer? Juicers tend to always be on the high end, and food processors are almost getting up there in the price range. When I was looking for those two types of kitchen utensils and hoping for both of them to be budget-friendly, I hit a wall.
However, one day, I went to Target and found a blender that promoted to be stellar for juicing and was promoted as a food chopper: The Oster Precise Blender. I decided to purchase it and give it a shot. I have been using the blender and the food chopper to make juices, smoothies, sauces, dressings, and so much more. And, yet, I haven’t been disappointed.
When it comes to juicing, sometimes there is pulp still in the juice. What I like to do is get a strainer and drain my juice after I finished making it. Doing that solves the problem of having a juice that isn’t smooth.
Also, the blender does not take up a lot of space in my kitchen. In other kitchens, there’s a tendency is to have all these utensils separately: juicer, blender, or food chopper. With the Oster Precise Blender, you will have all three-in-one!
Environment-friendly Tupperware or Mason Jars
On top of using Tupperware for meal prepping, you can also use them or mason jars to store your homemade sauces and dressings.
At first, I didn’t think I would need a good amount of Tupperware or mason jars. Once I began to explore new recipes that required to make homemade cheeses, sauces, and dressings, I found myself lacking storage items for leftovers.
More importantly, if you are always on a time crunch, you can use the mason jars for overnight oats or chopped up fruit for on-the-go breakfast.
